May 8th will be the first time that I use my freedom to vote - and I am very excited to be able to put this privilege, that men and women for decades have sacrificed their lives for, to use! Fall semester, I took a Political Science class that really opened up my eyes to the importance of voting and now I never want to miss a chance to better my community and let my voice be heard.
May 8th, North Carolinians will be voting on city councils, local political representatives, and a new amendment that would officially define marriage as the union of one man and one woman. It's kind of weird coming fresh out of the BYU bubble and thrown into this tumultuous state where back and forth the words "AGAINST" and "FOR" are being thrown in my face regarding the marriage amendment. People are stealing signs, mudslinging (one of my Political Science terms, thank you.), and just being plain awful. Can't we all just get along? I understand where both sides are coming from and what I choose on that ballot is a private matter, but it really is eye opening to see this going on. Don't get me wrong, I am really proud of my community for stepping up and being passionate about this. I think it's great to see people becoming aware and active about issues in their community. I just wish it didn't have to be so outright mean.
What is announced the evening of May 8th will offend people on either side - that's politics. Not everyone wins.
Actually, that's life.
I'm just happy that I live in a place where we are given the chance to speak up and let our political representatives know what we want. Not everywhere has that benefit; in some places you can be killed for speaking up about something like this. Even though it may not be the most quiet election day we have ever had, it is relatively calm compared to other places where leaders are assassinated and citizens burned for simply wanting change. And I am so grateful to live in a nation where we can have peaceful elections.
At the end of the day, no matter what you are voting for or against, I hope that everyone gets out there and votes ! Let your voice be heard. You can make a difference.
Xoxo
I'm glad I don't have to relive Prop 8, but I'm glad I got the experience and I think it will be good for you too!!
ReplyDeleteSadly I was in high school and couldn't do much, but now you're all responsible and stuff and get to vote!! (it's first for me too woop!)
I think Prop 8 was ten times worse than this! I am so proud of the members who held their ground during that time! I bet it was a cool experience at least - to be able to stand up for your beliefs like that!
ReplyDeleteWe are getting old and responsibility is following us everywhere! Even to the voting booth. :)
