Today I am in Rio Claro, Brasil! Just for today. My zone is having an activity today which means all the missionaries that live in this area (which consists of four cities and 18 missionaries) are here for a meeting and then hanging out. Not sure what we will do but it is fun to be with the other missionaries from around here.
This past week was a little slow because my companion was on bed rest for two days. She has a problem with her foot so the mission president's wife told her to take it easy for two days. She still can't walk well and is now taking prescribed medicine that I hope will help. We went to the hospital and they don't know what happened so we are just taking it easy. She walks like a zombie so I call her my zombie companion. :) I hope she heals soon so that we can get back to power walking the city and teaching more lessons. We still had really, really good lessons this week and marked another baptism for the 22nd. Woohoo!
The Sister Trainers of the mission visited us this week too which was fun because one of them is my old companion - aka my "mom" of the mission. It was fun to have them here for the night and to teach with a new companion. I learned a lot and it is always great to see how others teach and get new ideas from them. I did a division with Sister Lopez from Argentina and she is SO FUN! We made one contact in the street and the man ended up giving us some sweet Brasil earrings! The day to day life of a missionary can get a little slow so it was good to have some fresh air.
During one of our down days, I taught Sister Lucero how to make chocolate chip cookies! Everyone here LOVES chocolate chip cookies and always beg for them. I am perfecting my recipe here because they don't have a lot of the things we use in the United States but surprisingly they have been delicious! The batch Sister Lucero made was a little rough...but she ate them. :)
By far the best dessert I have had here in Brasil is called "Pão com Mel." I don't know how to describe it but it is SO GOOD! I got the recipe so I will make it when I get back. :) Here they eat a lot of custards and puddings - good, but nothing beats the desserts of the US!
This week someone asked me if I was a nun, so that was fun. The questions we get every week are always something new.
With our down time this week, I was able to study a lot about the life of our Savior in the book of Luke. I love reading Luke because he has details that none of the other Gospels have. He is the one that writes about our Savior's immense pain that he bled from every pore. Learning more about our Savior's love and sacrifice has helped me to become a better missionary because I want to become like Him. I want to love like the Savior and give my all. The Savior taught because He loved and wanted the salvation of those He taught - I am striving to become more like Jesus Christ everyday. I know that as we study the life of our Savior, the immensely important characteristics that He has will begin to blossom forth in our own lives. I love our Savior and am so thankful for all that He has given me - including this mission!
What a blessing it is to be here and to teach others about our Savior and His love for them. I know that He loves each and every one of you all and wants you to be happy! I hope you feel this happiness this week as you go about all daily duties. I love and miss you all and pray that you are doing well! Sounds cliché, but Jesus loves you!
Stay safe with all this crazy cold weather!
Amo vocês!
Sister Serre
