Dunkin Donuts.

I bet many of you did not know that 11 o'clock closing time for the Dunkin Donuts in Durham, NC means two things - closing time and free donuts. If you arrive before 11 PM, all the day's donuts that have not been sold can belong to you.
That is literally garbage bags full of free donuts.

This became a tradition for a friend and me over the summer; we decided to bring it back over Winter Break.
Last night at 10:45 we sped the 15 miles of dark, rainy freeway and as we pulled into the parking lot, at exactly 11 PM I mind you, I desperately ran into the store, thankful that they had not already closed shop, and yelled, "CAN WE GET THE FREE DONUTS?"
Another pair was there and this at first worried me until I realized they had two boxes of donuts. "Fools," I thought to myself as they paid the cashier. But in actuality, I was the fool.
"We aren't allowed to do that anymore." the young cashier told me with his silly little hat on.
"What...?" I responded just in time for my friend to come running in.
"Some kids smeared jelly donuts all over the windows next door and now we can't give out the donuts anymore. Sorry."
My friend and I stood there in disbelief, partly because of disappointment and partly because of the sheer amazement that someone would waste perfectly good, free donuts on a window.
Not wanting to go home empty handed, we begrudgingly bought a half-dozen of their cream filled donuts.
"I can give you one free donut," the cashier said as he rung up our order.
At least we got that.

Xoxo
